The Vikings braved wild seas, storms and icebergs. They travelled vast distances with no maps or compasses. They kept track of how far they had sailed by counting the days. They found their way by watching the sun and the stars. Wooden vanes fixed to their ships showed which way the wind was blowing. Icebergs, currents, flocks of birds, clumps of seaweed or the smell of sheep warned that they were nearing land.
